Water Deeply

Take the time to water along the circle of soil in the outer areas of your trees’ canopies. This is where the roots absorb the most water. Make sure to water until the soil is fully moist. Doing so will ensure your trees have all the moisture they need to survive the upcoming winter months.

Apply Mulch

Once you’ve watered your trees deeply, it’s important to apply a layer of mulch around the base of your trees. However, you never want to overcrowd the trunk of your trees because this can result in decay. Mulch acts as an insulator, keeping the temperature of the soil warm. It’s also a natural fertilizer that eventually breaks down, packing nutrients into the ground.

Wait To Prune

A lot of people mistakenly prune their trees during the early fall. However, early fall isn’t the ideal time for pruning because it can leave your trees vulnerable to disease and infection due to injuries sustained from pruning. Instead, it’s important to wait to prune until all the leaves have all fallen and temperatures are cold enough to keep disease and insects at bay.
